The Scale Section had a successful display at this years Wings & Wheel Model Show, in North Weald. We attracted the attention of several interested parties enquiring about joining our club as new members. The weather this year was a bit of a mixed bag, with Saturday probably turning out to be the best day, although the show was more crowded on the Sunday. Amongst our display. was an opportunity for David Petts to give his Bounty model it's first "Public Appearance" which was well received. Commiseration to Trevor Howard as one of his models had the misfortune to sink! Thankfully it was quickly rescued, to begin its long dry out! We also whizzed the Club 500's around the pool. Even during the rain showers, they were still able to pull in the crowds! |

Last Sunday, we had a great turnout for the latest round of our annual Scale Steering Competition. The winds were fairly light & the sun shone all day for us. Robin Lee won the Scale Steering Competition with a maximum two clear rounds. He then went on to show an impressive display in the Club 500 race, that was until he crashed into the island & turned over! This allowed Neil Martin to come through & win the race. We were also treated to a first 'successful' sail of David Petts new scale sail project "Bounty". it performed well even in the light winds.
After the St Judes Day Storm, it was easy to fear the worst from a lake venue that is surrounded by trees. Then it seemed our worst fears were a reality with pictures of the Tea Shed obscured by a collapsed tree (pictured) & a similar story with the Toilet Block. Amazingly, the damage looking worse than it actually was. The Tea shed was just missed by the heavy parts of the tree & although the Toilet Block took a direct hit, the roof held & damage was kept to a minimum. There was also a sizeable amount of debris that had landed in the lake itself. I am pleased to say, that with just two mornings work, the determined Scale Members have cleared both of the buildings, the lake & surrounding areas of debris. My thanks to David Brumstead & David Petts for the pictures. A beautiful sunny day with no wind was to set the scene for the final event of this years Scale Steering Competition. OOD was Daniel Martin who set a course that was described as both simple yet challenging with no clear rounds achieved. David Petts taking the honours again today & will be walking away with the Trophy at the end of the year awards prize giving. The Club 500's struggled to race very well as there was the beginnings of leaf fall in the lake & Heather Lee took the honours by successfully managing to keep her boat out of trouble. A pleasant day at the lake today, not sunny & hot as the weatherman predicted, but warm enough. Scale Steering Competition was won by Paul Freshney & the Club 500 Race by David Petts (He was also the only finisher, so we had to give him the victory this time!) We were also joined by Daniel Martin's school friend Jacob who is interested in joining the club next year. Final Scale Steering Competition of the year is on the 6th October (leaf & weed permitting), it's all still to play for in the championship, as long as Mr Petts sinks next round! We battled the elements somewhat this weekend at the Essex Country Show at Barleylands Farm, Billericay. The Southend Club once again hosted the event offering a more structured on-the-water display time system throughout both days, which even the rain failed to entirely ruin. This year there was displays of Scale, Fast Electric, Club 500 races & Marblehead Yacht races. Unfortunately due to the weather, there was a very low turnout from the general public, so not many people got to see the display. We managed to look a little more dangerous in the Club 500 racing, but the Southend boats still took all of the honours come presentation time. I think some more tweaking & fine tuning to be done over the winter & maybe we can get them next year! On a positive note, thanks to Peter Revill & his new security system, nothing got stolen from our stand this year. Today, once again, under beautiful skies, we played hosts to the Moorhen Model Boat Club from Harlow. A particularly challenging Scale Steering Course was set, as we clearly had to respond in kind to the difficult course they had set earlier this year, when we visited them. Neil Martin eventually taking the honours from David Petts via a coin toss, as it was a tie for first place. That almost made up for the Wing-nut incident (see earlier posts!) Robin Lee took first place in the Club 500 racing that followed. A good day seamed to be enjoyed by all who attended. What a fantastic day we all had, perfect weather & lovely guests. We had visitors from Wat Tyler, Grays Thurrock & Southend Club come over to us for a days sailing. We hosted a Scale Steering Competition for those who wished to enter, likewise some Club 500 races & offered access to the lake for those who just wanted to free sail. We also had a raffle & raised enough money to provide free food for all of those who attended including some tasty hot-dogs - many thanks to David Petts & his wife Brigitta for providing those |
